Estonian composer Madis Muul introduces a compelling new entry into modern classical repertoire with String Quartet No. 1 “Echoes of Layers”, performed by the Muul Ensemble. The piece explores nature-inspired themes and inner reflection through a blend of European classical structure and subtle elements from South Indian Carnatic music.
Inspired by a quiet walk through the woods, Echoes of Layers is a sonic narrative that transitions from simplicity to complexity. Its structure consists of three movements, each offering a different angle on the journey:
- Horizon. Unfolding: A serene landscape giving way to intricate textures.
- Growth. Time: A meditation on evolution, inspired by Percy Smith’s 1910 short film The Birth of a Flower.
- Depths. Cells: Delving inward, this movement evokes spiritual resonance, featuring tonal inspiration from the Indian tampura.
Muul’s foundation in jazz piano (Siena Jazz University, Italy) and composition studies (ArtEZ, Netherlands), paired with his experience collaborating with Giridhar Udupa, allows him to bridge genres and cultures. These layers of influence are evident throughout the quartet’s composition.
International recognition follows Muul’s evolving body of work. He earned the Estonian Theater Award (2022), placed second at the International Songwriting Awards, and was acknowledged at the Estonian Jazz Awards. His live performances span Europe and beyond, with All About Jazz calling his sound “cosmic, tender, and deeply immersive.”
Muul is now preparing to unveil String Quartet No. 2 in spring 2026, which will appear alongside this work on a dedicated vinyl edition.
