UMI’s ‘people stories‘ brings love, healing, and humanity into focus with cinematic honesty and genre-fluid warmth.
With people stories, UMI unveils a deeply personal debut album that extends her soft-spoken, genre-blending style into a celebration of vulnerability, healing, and connection. Now released via Epic Records, the project places UMI’s signature tranquil delivery at the center of heartfelt narratives inspired by both her life and the experiences of others.
The album’s focus track, “RIGHT WRONG,” distills the essence of the entire body of work. Anchored by swooning vocals and a warm, nostalgic instrumental, the track comes accompanied by a music video that recalls early 2000s MTV romance with a modern twist. About the single, UMI shares, “This song was freestyle written about a conversation between me and my higher self inspired by my mom… She guides me without judgement the same way my inner voice does for me when I’m alone… ‘RIGHT WRONG’ is a reminder to follow the heart & to lean on those you love.”
Throughout people stories, UMI balances emotional introspection with sonic elegance. Each track unfolds like a letter—intimate, honest, and contemplative—capturing themes of ego, identity, self-trust, and inner peace. The project weaves R&B, soul, folk, and pop together seamlessly, while vocal interludes from her therapist offer moments of grounding and self-awareness.
“I wanted to be the storyteller, the vessel to express everyone’s stories,” UMI reflects. “We all live very similar lives, same colors, slightly different hues… For me, learning to accept even the darkest colors of life was deeply healing and possible through relating to others.”
By turning personal evolution into a shared experience, people stories gives voice to the universal and the emotional. It’s UMI at her most expressive—and perhaps, her most transformative.
