“State of Hawaii” is Skegss’ second single off Top Heavy, blending bossa nova with island escapism and Spanish vocals.
Australian trio Skegss are back with “State of Hawaii”, a fresh single that channels tropical vibes through bossa nova grooves, trumpet melodies, and Spanish vocal flourishes. It’s the second release from their upcoming EP Top Heavy, arriving June 27 on Loma Vista Recordings.
A breezy, laid-back track, “State of Hawaii” reflects the band’s latest sonic exploration. With smooth instrumentation and relaxed rhythms, the song delivers a feel-good escape inspired by Hawaii’s natural beauty and a desire to unplug from everyday pressure.
“We had a bit of fun with this song in the studio where we tried a few different versions and then thought it would be fun to go a little Latin or Cuban, a bit of a mix of things,” says frontman Benny Reed. “We got some congas in there and trumpet for the first time, as well as some Spanish vocals.”
The track follows “So Excited” and arrives with a video directed by Kale Neville, shot while the band toured internationally. It’s a visual extension of the song’s chilled energy and reflects their on-the-road lifestyle.
Having just finished a 20+ date headline run in North America, Skegss are wrapping up their European tour, including sold-out shows in London, Paris, and Glasgow. Next month, they’ll embark on their largest-ever Australian tour, including dates tied to the 2025 VIVID program.
With Pacific Highway Music and a #1 ARIA charting album (Rehearsal) under their belts, Skegss are proving there’s no limit to their creativity or reach.
