Mae Muller releases “Breakaway,” a raw and vibrant dance-pop track about vulnerability and empowerment.
Pop powerhouse Mae Muller is back—and she’s stepping into a fearless new era. Following a 15-month hiatus, the North London singer-songwriter releases “Breakaway,” her first single as an independent artist. Produced by Herik Michelsen, the track is available now across all streaming platforms.
“Breakaway” blends Mae’s signature lyricism with shimmering electronic production and deep club rhythms. Evocative of early 2000s dance floors, the song channels personal transformation through pulsing basslines, vocoded vocals, and a sparkling pop core.
“I wrote Breakaway in a time when I felt quite lost as an artist,” Mae shares. “I was putting so much pressure on myself with my newfound independence… It’s about navigating vulnerability, but also finding my power within it, whilst not losing the joy along the way.”
The music video, directed by Ben Cole (Kylie, Mahalia), captures the haunting energy of the track in a visual narrative full of raw emotion and late-night introspection.
More than just a comeback, “Breakaway” marks a clear shift in Muller’s artistry. After spending the past year exploring her identity outside of label systems, Mae emerges stronger, sharper, and more in touch with her creative instincts. The result is a sound that merges underground influences with chart-ready hooks and personal storytelling.
Whether she’s addressing heartache, rejection, or embracing her signature “bad bitch energy,” Mae Muller’s new direction is vibrant and unapologetically honest. With “Breakaway,” she begins a chapter that is entirely her own—and it’s already making waves.
