UK drummer and songwriter Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler returns with a commanding new single, ‘The In Crowd’, offering a fresh take on the Billy Page classic while recontextualizing it as a bold anthem for originality in music. More than just a cover, the track serves as a powerful statement about the value of original artistry, and a moving tribute to the late Motörhead frontman, Lemmy Kilmister.
Initially envisioned as a thank-you to musicians and fans dedicated to original work, Bowler’s rendition of ‘The In Crowd’ evolved into something far more meaningful. With 2025 marking ten years since Lemmy’s passing, Bowler developed the project as a personal homage to an artist who stood for authenticity and fearless expression.
Featuring a lineup rooted in rock’s storied history, the track unites some of Lemmy’s close musical circle. Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler helms drums, lyrics, and arrangement, joined by ex-Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey, MC5 legend Wayne Kramer on guitar, and Girlschool founding member Enid Williams providing commanding vocals.
Bowler’s ties to Motörhead run deep, having recorded demos with Phil Campbell and Würzel during early sessions for March Or Die in 1992. The inclusion of Wayne Kramer adds even more significance, as Kramer completed one of his final guitar recordings for this track, later responding, “The track ROCKS!”
Constructed in a unique way, the song began with solo drum tracks, allowing each musician to layer their individual touch organically. With its bold structure and powerful message, Bowler’s reworking of ‘The In Crowd’ becomes more than a tribute — it’s a celebration of those who dare to create something original.
