Award-winning Australian composer Dale Cornelius has officially announced the upcoming release of his latest project, ‘What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?’. Developed in collaboration with the Melbourne-based string collective Eclective Strings, the album blends string quartet arrangements with synthesizers and field recordings, all delivered in an immersive Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio mix.
The genesis of ‘What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?’ can be traced back to an accidental discovery in Montalcino, Italy. While walking past the Concattedrale di San Salvatore, Cornelius captured the evocative sound of a metal door shifting in the wind. This singular, percussive moment became the central sonic motif of the title track and served as the foundational inspiration for the entire record. By utilizing Dolby Atmos, Cornelius has meticulously reconstructed the spatial essence of that Italian evening, effectively positioning the listener within a soundscape where strings and synthesizers converge.
At the emotional core of the album lies ‘A Whispered Dawn (Spencer’s Lullaby)’, a composition that carries significant personal history. Written in 1999 during a time of immense uncertainty, the piece was created while Cornelius’s first-born son, Spencer, faced critical health challenges. Born at just 27 weeks, Spencer was among the first infants in Australia to undergo in utero surgery, subsequently spending three months in neonatal intensive care. Though the composition remained a manuscript for 26 years, ‘What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?’ marks the first time this deeply private work has been recorded.
Set for an October 2026 release, this album signifies a major new chapter for the composer.
