The contemporary classical landscape prepares for a major expansion as Norwegian composer Solveig Sørbø announces the worldwide release of her 90-minute opera, ‘Heroin Chic’. Scheduled for arrival on 16 October 2026 via Solsnu and distributed by Diger, the expansive work will be accessible in digital, 2CD, and 2xVinyl formats. This project highlights a significant milestone for Sørbø, who utilizes a maximalist and emotionally charged sound world to explore the complexities of human existence.
Adapted from the novel by Norwegian writer Maria Kjos Fonn, ‘Heroin Chic’ navigates heavy thematic territory, including addiction, self-destruction, identity, sexuality, death, and the delicate balance between innocence and physicality. By synthesizing elements of contemporary classical music with influences from popular culture, Sørbø has crafted a highly theatrical soundscape that is as colourful and hypnotic as it is emotionally uncompromising.

The development of ‘Heroin Chic’ has already garnered substantial acclaim. Its concert premiere occurred in Romania in February 2025, where the performance was met with a standing ovation from an audience of 500. Reflecting on its impact, the Romanian cultural magazine Revista Migalo observed that the production “struck the collective psyche,” while the Norwegian publication Klassekampen highlighted the work as a “danse macabre.”
Following its initial success, the opera held its Norwegian concert premiere in February 2026 at Oslo’s Parkteatret as part of the Klassisk på Park series. The sold-out show showcased performances by top Norwegian classical musicians alongside live visuals by Franciska Eliassen. The dedication behind the project earned high praise; the Norwegian music publication Ballade likened Sørbø’s creative resolve to the competitive spirit of cross-country skiing champion Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. To ensure the final release captured the intensity of the live experience, the entire work was recorded live to tape at Jar Church in a single, rigorous day.
