Joanna Borrett Debuts Moments of Freedom, A Reflective Song Cycle for Voice and Piano

Set for release on 29 September 2025, Joanna Borrett’s debut album Moments of Freedom marks a defining moment for the self-taught composer and cellist. This five-song cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano explores personal and universal emotional milestones, such as early wonder, romantic connection, resilience, and the depth of human experience.

The recording took place at the acclaimed Royal College of Music, featuring performances from Angelina Dorlin-Barlow and Firoze Madon, both rising names in the UK classical scene. Their involvement, along with the guidance of Nick Sears, brings fresh energy and skill to Borrett’s introspective writing.

Joanna comments on the collaboration, “Moments of Freedom is a cycle of five songs that represent different stages of life. Working with Angelina and Firoze was a joy — their insight and commitment added an extra element to the music and I was thrilled by their artistry.”

What distinguishes Joanna’s story is the path she took to get here. Following a 20-year hiatus from performing, she re-entered the classical world with a renewed purpose. Her decision to self-train in improvisation, arrangement, and composition eventually led to her being published by Kevin Mayhew Publishers, a turning point that paved the way for wide recognition.

Her compositions have reached audiences across multiple platforms — featured on BBC Radio 3, Magic Classical, and chosen as Gramophone’s Video of the Day. Her orchestral works were even performed by the Duchess of Edinburgh’s string ensemble during official events.

Additionally, her music’s educational value has been affirmed with three string pieces included in the Trinity exam syllabus, an accomplishment that confirms her place among respected contemporary composers.
