Japanese-British artist Hana Kuro reveals her debut J-pop single, “Be Romantic,” dropping February 7 via Handcraft and Virgin Records.
Rising Japanese-British artist Hana Kuro will make her debut with the release of “Be Romantic” on February 7th through Handcraft Entertainment and Virgin Records. Aiming to redefine J-pop on the global stage, Hana blends her British and Japanese sensibilities, creating a sound uniquely her own.
“Be Romantic” was produced by Michael Africk, a multi-platinum and 6X Japan Gold Disc-winning producer, alongside Zeph Park. Combining Hana’s striking voice with Africk’s proven expertise in J-pop production, the single serves as an introduction to Hana’s vibrant artistic identity.
Hana’s diverse upbringing in Southeast London and Yokosuka, Japan, deeply influenced her music. Her father introduced her to electronic sounds and alternative bands like Radiohead and Gorillaz, while her teenage years saw her falling in love with R&B and hip-hop from artists like Frank Ocean, H.E.R., and Summer Walker. At the same time, she stayed deeply connected to her Japanese heritage by speaking the language at home and immersing herself in Japanese music, including artists such as Lamp and Naoko Gushima.

Hana describes her creative process: “Everything is always a combination of things that I like. I’m half-Japanese, but I was also brought up in the UK surrounded by Western culture. I’m a very open-minded person, and I try to fuse together different elements. Musically, I’m experimenting and fusing everything together in my own way. I can’t wait to share this song and journey ahead with my fans and followers.”
Michael Africk, who is also the CEO of Handcraft Entertainment, adds: “J-Pop has been waiting for Hana. As soon as I met her, heard her sound, felt her energy, and experienced her style and aesthetic, I knew I had found someone very special. She has the potential to bring J-pop to the worldwide stage.”
Hana Kuro’s “Be Romantic” marks the start of an exciting new chapter for J-pop and a bright future for this rising star.
