Out Now Magazine Spotlight series featuring rising DJ and producer Vanoxx
Already known for his sick harder styles DJ sets as DJ ‘b4vos’, brings rising artist Bart van Os a new and promising sound to the House music scene as DJ and producer ‘Vanoxx’.
Where are you from?
Born and raised in the Netherlands (or Holland). Where I grew up in a warm and cozy neighborhood in the small Dutch village called ‘Denekamp’, which is located in the country’s eastside (4 life! haha), close to the German border.
When did you start making music?
At a pretty young age I started with some music lessons, I wanted to learn how to play the drums. I guess that those lessons are the origins and kinda shaped my love and passion for beats and rhythm. So, it didn’t take me long to start producing my own beats, rhythms and sound.
How do you describe your music?
I’d rather let the music speak… But I’ll try put it into words. For whatever mood you feel like, there’s a song and every track, give’s a different feel. Like one of my tracks, the ‘Music Takes Me’… I try to let every song take you on a different journey, there is a different feeling to every melody and every tune tap into another mood. Whether you’re looking for a club- or festival banger, or you’re more in the mood for the summer sounds. In some of my tracks you’ll find pounding beats, daring drops and the sickest sounds. Other creations with soothing sounds to chill out and will ease your mind. None is alike.
Favorite moment from your career?
Only one favorite?! There are so many! But I think my favorite moments are the moments when I realize (again) that there people out there, that know who I am, even though I don’t know who they are. Moments when I’m reminded of my ‘die-hard-fans’, people that will follow me and my music, from booth to stage, dance to festival, anywhere and everywhere around the world. The moments that I realize that I can express myself true my music and when I do, there people out there that will find happiness, comfort or support of some kind in my songs.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
Well… the musical influence was everywhere around me when I grew up. Many famous, well-known producers, DJ’s and artists of the ‘harder styles’ stood up in our little town. Some say Denekamp is the (re)birthplace of the Dutch ‘Hardcore’ subculture. I was young and wild, just like the music, loved that kind of festivals and party’s. But there was one artist that really inspired me, that’s Hardcore artist and producer ‘Angerfist’. His music together with the live acts and the way that he concurred the world with a not very well-known music genre. He inspired me to start producing and also mixing with the ‘old-school’ vinyls.
Besides Angerfist, there’s one other artist that comes to mind and turned out to be a huge inspiration to me. I saw a documentary of his life and of the really huge influence and impact his tracks made in the whole world of music; Avicci. I know it sounds like a bit of a cliché, but that documentary really made me reflect on myself and my music.
What is your producing software?
At first, I tried a few different kinds of producing software, but only one really stood out. Now I’ve been producing for a few years with ‘Image Line Fruity Loops Studio’, I can find all the stuff I need for my music in this software. Besides Fruity Loops, I like to use many different kinds of plugins, like ‘Serum’ and ‘Kontakt’ and even used live recorded instruments. I’m not really about the pre-cooked beats and melodies, but like to create my own sound.
What other things do you do besides making music?
Besides my music, I don’t have much going on at the moment. I’m kind of a geek and spend most of my time behind my laptop working on my music, sometimes a little of this or a little of that, not anything really interesting or crazy stuff to tell you really…
What is your favorite track of all time?
Eeehhm… I don’t think I really have an all-time favorite… Most of the time I work on my own tracks, so I don’t really listen to a whole lot of other artists to be honest. But I do always have an ‘momentarily favorite’, mostly this is one of the tracks I work on or just finished working on. At this time my ‘momentarily favorite’ is my latest release; ‘Heartbeat’. Every time I hear that awesome sound, it makes me want to just dance a little.
What is your best-producing tip?
Start with a solid idea, know what you want your creation to become. Don’t understate the importance of a DAW; it can be to a producer, what a canvas is to a visual artist. It’s kind of a musician’s ‘tool’ to transfer his creativity into his music. Know your environment, never forget to sometimes be creative with velocity in your melodies, try to always create your own sound(s).
Why did you start making music?
Back in my school-days, many kids liked playing computer games like ‘Roller Coaster Tycoon’ for example. But gaming never really was a thing that I was into, so I searched for an alternative. As I said before, the musical influence was all around growing up in Denekamp. This is how I found my ‘first love’, FL Studio.
What are your goals for the future?
I love that my music brings people joy. So, I want to keep on spreading happiness with my tracks, try to let my music reach out and touch as many people as possible.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
Starting off producing, don’t be afraid to do some ‘out of the box’ thinking. Go!! And do your own thing! Be creative and create your own sound. But be realistic and set realistic goals for yourself. If you raise the bar to high you might get discouraged by lack of ‘successes.
Please write a message to your fans.
Thanx for all your love and support I’ve been getting. Keep on listening, stay tuned and play it on! Because there’s many more to come! I love you guys!
