Out Now Magazine Spotlight series featuring The Buckleys for an interview
Where are you from?
Lachlan: we are from a small town on the east coast of Australia called Byron bay, we’ve spent most of our lives growing in the region surfing, creating music, and saving up to get to Nashville.
When did you start making music?
Molly: We grew up playing music as a family, writing songs with dad, jamming in the lounge room etc. It’s always been part of our life!
How do you describe your music?
Sarah: Country / Pop / Rock would probably sum it up! We have a lot of different influences though that are a part of our sound so we love to incorporate whatever we’re inspired by at the time, so our sound is constantly evolving.
Favorite moment from your career?
Lachlan: it’s hard to pinpoint my exact favourite moment in my career so far however one that really stands out that I’ll never forget would be the first few times a crowd started singing along to our songs.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
Molly: I love pulling inspiration from different artists for certain things, whether it’s Debbie Harry or Joan Jett for when I just need to hear a badass female perspective or Electric Light Orchestra for incredibly dynamic instrumental and song writing inspo. I really don’t have one inspiration, it’s more like a collective love of all different things then taking those and smashing it together haha.
Who is in your production and song writing team?
Sarah: We are lucky enough to have had the opportunity of collaborating with so many people in Nashville, Australia and now even LA. For our new EP ‘Take It As It Comes’ we worked a lot with our producer of course, Chad Carlson, and we also wrote a bunch of the songs together with him. Jared Hampton from LANCO also co-wrote one of the songs on our new EP with us (the title track) and we can’t wait to work more with Jared. Phil Barton has also been a big part of our writing team and I have written a lot of our singles with our buddy Phil. He is a total legend and incredible songwriter. In our debut album ‘Daydream’, we had a lot of different collaborators as I have spent so much time co-writing in Nashville. It’s always exciting to collaborate with new people and also build on the creative connections you have with people that you have loved working with before. I feel really grateful to have an incredible network of songwriters I always love writing with!
What other things do you do besides making music?
Lachlan: other activities we like to indulge in aside from music is surfing, vintage shopping and exploring nature. Honestly though there’s not much more we really do besides music.
What is your favorite track of all time?
Molly: I think this is one question none of us will ever be able to answer!
What is your best song writing tip?
Sarah: I would say a big one is just writing as much as you can. It’s always magical when there’s inspiration there in the moment, however I do believe in order to be able to best capture that inspiration when it comes, it’s important to have put in the hours working on your craft and developing your skills as a writer.

Why did you start making music?
Sarah: We grew up in a very musical family, so we were pretty young when we first started playing music. Our dad is a musician so we often would jump up and sing some songs with him at his gigs growing up, and it was a really natural progression to become a ‘family band’ because that’s just what we’ve always done as a family!
What are your goals for the future?
Molly: We really just want to be out on the road as much as we can performing and sharing our music with the world, it’s our favourite thing to do!
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
Lachlan: the best advice I could give to young artists would be to practice until your fingers bleed and to double check with yourself that you absolutely LOVE music and the process of creating it and the work that comes along with gaining any sort of success, and lastly always stay positive!
Please write a message to your fans.
Molly: Thank you for supporting us, boogieing to our tunes and letting us do what we love to do! Forever grateful.
