Out Now Magazine Spotlight series featuring Kxng Tres for an exclusive interview
Where are you from?
Crystal Springs, Mississippi
When did you start making music?
I started making music at 17 years old. I was watching “The Bobby Brown Story” on BET. I heard Bobby Brown’s song “Rock Wit’cha”. It was at that moment that I decided that I really wanted to do music, so a few weeks later, I contacted my producer, Sir Jay. With his help, I was able to cover that song. When we finished recording, we played the track back and it turned out very amazing. I knew at that moment that I wanted to make music my life.
How do you describe your music?
My genre is R&B/Soul. I would describe my music as seductive and romantic. Take my song “Closer” for example. “Closer” is very slow and sexy. It’s also very deep and soulful. You all should have a listen.
Favorite moment from your career?
My favorite of my career is recording my personal favorite song “Closer”. I say that because I put my entire heart and soul into that song. Unlike my debut single “Me and You”, “Closer” has a slow, sexy and seductive vibe to it. In this song, I’m saying that the only thing that I want to do is get CLOSER to my lover. According to the song, my lover often asks me “What can I do for you?”. I respond by simply saying “It’s nothing major. Just let me get closer to you.” If you haven’t heard the song yet, you should check it out. It is definitely a vibe.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
My inspiration comes from groups and artists such as Ne-Yo, Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Big Time Rush, Usher, New Edition, and so many more.
What is your producing software?
Logic Pro X
What other things do you do besides making music?
I am a drummer. I drum at my church and I plan to continue working on my drumming craft by studying drummers such as Jonanthan “Sugarfoot” Moffett, Bruno Mars, and Queen’s Roger Taylor. I’m also a YouTuber. My channel name is “Kxng Tres” because it’s an Official Artist Channel. You can find all of my reactions videos as well as my songs and music videos on there.
What is your favorite track of all time?
I can honestly say that I do NOT have a favorite track. Whether it be my music or anyone else’s, I just don’t have a favorite track because I listen to all genres and the songs I listen are all AMAZING in my opinion. It would be too hard to pick a favorite.
What is your best-producing tip?
Keep your eyes and ears open. You never know who or what could give you the inspiration that you need.
Why did you start making music?
I started making music because ever since I was little, I wanted to sing, dance, and create my own music. As I previously mentioned, I grew up listening to artists such as Michael Jackson, The Temptations, New Edition, Ne-Yo, Usher, Big Time Rush and many more. I first started singing with the Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church Mass Choir. I even led songs in the choir such as “Walk Like Jesus”, “God Is On My Side”, “Searching”, and “Still Waters”. After singing at my church for a few years, I decided that I should share he musical talents with the world. With the help of my producer and good friend Jacob Green aka SIR JAY, I decided to cover two songs just to test the waters and see if there were people in the world who would actually want to listen to what I had to say. The songs I covered were “Rock Wit’cha” by Bobby Brown and “Back At One” by Brian McKnight. When people heard the songs, they absolutely loved them. My supporters often asked me when was I going to do an original song. After a few months of sitting in silence and praying about what I should do, I decided to give my supporters what they wanted.
What are your goals for the future?
My only goal is to always create music that will touch someone. Whether it’s one person or a thousand, I want my music to have an impact on someone’s life.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
This advice isn’t just for young music producers and DJs. This is for anyone. If you have a talent, do NOT just sit on it. Use it. Do something with it. God blessed us all with some type of talent. Use yours while you have it because if you don’t, God will take it away from you.
