Makichi is three words put together in our language and the translation is Us/Who/What , Ma/Ki/Chi .
Makichi formed with 2 persons, Sonia and Ash. Sonia started playing Tar (Iranian instrument) at the age of 16, and then a few years after, became interested in singing as well. So she decided to start learning singing professionally.
Ash started learning violin at the age of 12, because of his father who was a well-known music composer he became interested in music at an early age. After a few years, he switched his instrument to the bass guitar. And after high school he attended Conservatory.
Where are you from?
We are a duo, Ash was born in Iran and Sonia was born in France, in an Iranian family.
When did you start making music?
Ash and Sonia met in 2015 in Iran where Sonia came for work. After they met each other they started playing music together and the Makichi band formed .
How do you describe your music?
We try our best to capture the soul of Persian music and bring it into Electronic and Alternative music, without producing fusion music or combining the instruments of these 2 music genres. The first choice of other artists might be combining the traditional instruments with electronic music but we don’t wanna do that. We’re trying to combine these genres on a musical level.
Favorite moment from your career?
After we came to France for living here, we released an EP “Error” which brought us a Silver Trophy from Global Music Awards, a candidate in Independent Music Awards. Which was pretty sweet for us because back in Iran and its limitations we couldn’t work properly. That was a beautiful first official success for us.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
One of Sonia’s biggest inspirations is always Mohammadreza Shajarian, one the greatest Persian traditional singer/musician. But for both of us I can say Pink Floyd .
What is your producing software?
We’re working with Logic Pro.
What other things do you do besides making music?
Music is our main job and our main focus. We both are songwriters and producers of our own music. But we also try to have some activity for Animal Rights. Ash also does photography as a hobby sometimes. And we both make some videos sometimes. And also activity on social media which is pretty serious these days.
What is your favorite track of all time?
Echoes by Pink Floyd. And Tomorrow Never Knows by the Beatles.
What is your best-producing tip?
Always search for new sounds within and also new knowledge. And never stop learning.
Why did you start making music?
Actually it is our passion to make music. Because you can close your eyes but you can never close your ears. And we think the sound is the most powerful material in the whole world.
What are your goals for the future?
Actually we have an album on the way which we’re very excited about. Our new album “the RAIN stopped” is a concept album about Home and Homeland and we really work hard on this album. We try our best to bring out some new sounds and music from the inside of our heart. And we work with some amazing artists from Iran such as Faraz Taali as our Sound Engineer who had an amazing effect on the post production stage of the album.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
We are still so far away from a point where we could give advice, seek the advice from the real masters. The only advice we could give you is to never give up. As our motto “we never stay quiet”. It is inside of you, find it. Like a saying from the great Rumi, the water is in the jug but we wander around thirsty. There is also an equivalent saying in English, we seek water in the sea.
