Out Now Magazine Spotlight series featuring pop star on the rise Serena Foster for an exclusive interview
Hello, my name is Serena Foster and I am so excited to be here with Out Now Magazine! A little about me – I’m a born and raised California girl who loves to write songs, create art through music and visuals (music videos), and spread kindness and love above all!
Where are you from?
Just about thirty minutes from Hollywood, I am from a suburban town here in California called Simi Valley.
When did you start making music?
I first started singing at age four, learned guitar from my dad at age nine, and then took up piano at age sixteen. Now at twenty seven, I feel a lifetime of music in my heart, having grown up around it my entire life. My songwriting started at around age nine as well.
How do you describe your music?
My music is a blend of classic pop and electronic elements. I often call myself an electro-pop artist.
Favorite moment from your career?
Wow that is a tough question, but I guess if I had to pick one moment so far in my career, it would be when I got the phone call that one of the songs I wrote and sang on, with a good friend of mine (fellow LA artist, Hamster) would be used on the Netflix TV Series, “Lucifer”. That was a pretty cool phone call.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
Lady Gaga. Her music and art got me through some very difficult times in my life. She is truly everything I hope to give to my fans and more. She is a true icon and inspiration.
What is your producing software?
So to be completely honest on this question, I don’t do a lot of my own literal production, so say, when it comes to creating my music. I mainly just songwrite, and collaborate directly with whoever is producing the song. I am familiar with Presonus though! That is what I use in my little at home studio for demo writing.
What other things do you do besides making music?
I am an activist against bullying, and founded an awareness campaign called “No More Bullying”. I am a filmmaker and co-own a production company here in Los Angeles called, Starglow Productions. And, I am a cat lover and dedicated sushi consumer, who loves the beach and sunbathing.
What is your favorite track of all time?
Favorite track by another artist: Lady Gaga – Just Dance. Favorite track of mine: Serena Foster – Celebrate Love.
What is your best-producing tip?
ALWAYS write your song as a single. Never write, just to create a mediocre “filler song”. Write with purpose and means at all times.
Why did you start making music?
To be honest, music made me, me. Without it, I just wouldn’t be myself. Maybe that answers your question…
What are your goals for the future?
To keep writing new music, play live shows again after these wild past two years of quarantine, and to simply continue to create art that moves people.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. PERIOD.
Please write a message to your fans.
Thank you for all the love and support over these past ten years. I love you all with every piece of my heart. You are the reason I make music and you are the reason I create. Thank you for never giving up on me and my wild dreams.
