Out Now Magazine Spotlight series featuring country music rising star Sarah Harralson for an interview
Tell us about you:
My name is Sarah Harralson and I am a country singer, songwriter, and producer in Nashville, TN. My new album, Whiskey History, is out everywhere on February 18th.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Knoxville, TN and have been living in Nashville, TN for 8 years.
When did you start making music?
At the young age of 10. As a child, music was a great way for me to express my feelings and deal with my emotions.
How do you describe your music?
Country Folk
Favorite moment from your career?
Being invited to be a member of The Recording Academy last year
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
Definitely my Granddad. He was a bluegrass musician, and I definitely received my musical genes from him. He passed away when I was a teenager, but he always encouraged me to pursue music, and now I have his accordion he would always play.
What is your producing software?
Pro Tools
What other things do you do besides making music?
I love to travel, and I’m such an outdoors person, so I love finding new places to hike and explore. This year I’m training to run a 10k at the Nashville marathon.
What is your favorite track of all time?
It’s so hard to pick just one! If I’m picking a track solely on production, right now it’s probably “Protect Ya Neck” by Wu Tang Clan. I was watching the series about them on Hulu, and I love the insight the show gave on the production behind their songs. It’s amazing for that time all of the sampling they used and also the work they did in production that was very outside of box and advanced for that time
What is your best-producing tip?
Know when to step away. Your ears can become tired if you are working on a mix for a long period of time. I like to step away from a mix and re-visit later so I can hear it with fresh ears and make adjustments.
Why did you start making music?
Music is just something I was drawn to naturally. It was a great way to express my emotions as a quiet child, and I was drawn to melodies. My Granddad was a big influence for why I wanted to start creating music. Now I like to make music to help and heal others.
What are your goals for the future?
To keep making more music, play bigger stages, and reach more people with my music.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
Find the type of music you love producing most and roll with it. There are so many producers nowadays with modern technology, so you just have to find your special flair that people will crave. Don’t be afraid to experiment outside of the box and even break standard production rules to develop your own tasty method.
