Out Now Magazine Spotlight series featuring rising singer Meri for an interview
Tell us about you:
She is best known for her timeless voice and passion for the acoustic guitar. Her genres include folk, pop, and soul. With her songs, she expresses emotions rooted in her experiences, and her voice and guitar energy make her an extremely powerful songwriter. She draws inspiration from artists such as Ben Howard, Ed Sheeran, Vance Joy, and Amy Winehouse.
Where are you from?
Meri was born in the UK but raised in Tuscany, Italy.
When did you start making music?
From the time I was a child, I’ve always written my own notes, but it wasn’t until I travelled to Portugal and began playing live gigs that I realized I wanted to write my own music and become a singer songwriter.
How do you describe your music?
Generally, my music is a journey of folk and soul influences, although the hooky choruses recall 90’s pop and my roots in pop.
Favorite moment from your career?
My heart will always hold the memory of those first moments and that first song you ever released due to the expectations and curiosity to know if it would connect with people, so that tension and feeling will stay with me forever.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
Ben Howard and his album “Every Kingdom”. Every time I listen to it, it’s therapeutic.
What is your producing software?
I work on Ableton for all my ideas and arrangements, however for recording the final version and the production part, logic’s the man!
What other things do you do besides making music?
My energy makes me do a lot. I work out, go for walks in the countryside, on the beach or do some trekking. Travel is my favorite hobby so seeing new places is my priority most of the time.
What is your favorite track of all time?
Ben Howard – Keep Your Head Up
What is your best-producing tip?
When it comes to producing, I work with a professional studio and let them handle everything ☺ I just come up with the ideas and arrange everything, so most of the time I would walk into the studio with my PC and all the stems, and they would need to be retouched because I had used the wrong plug-ins.
However, I can give the best production tip: KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Why did you start making music?
I’d always admired the skill of putting words together, and loved how I could express myself through rapping and combining syllables with rhymes to convey my thoughts and ideas.
What are your goals for the future?
First and foremost, to improve as a songwriter. Ultimately, however, I hope to coach and teach songwriting techniques and help emerging artists live out their passion, create music and write songs for others.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
If you want your music to be real, it must be the way you want it to be. Don’t try to be like anyone else, instead try to be inspired by others and don’t compare yourself to anyone because we all express ourselves differently. Also, because music is a way to express ourselves, it has to be whatever you want it to be to feel that feeling.
Please write a message to your fans.
Thank you so much for all your support. Please let me know what you think about my music. I’m always really excited to hear from you. Remember, Keep It Simple! ☺
