Tell us about you:
My name is Bakes. I mostly describe myself as a lyrical rapper with mainstream appeal. My style is more focused on positive perspectives and manifesting your dreams, as well as self-belief and being purpose-driven.
Where are you from?
Born and raised in the Bay Area, but I’ve lived in San Diego for years now and that’s where I developed my artistry.
When did you start making music?
When I was in college at San Diego State University, I first got into making music. I was always into hip-hop prior to that as a fan and wanted to work in the music industry in some capacity.
How do you describe your music?
Overall lyrical and witty, with the sound being a mix of old school and new school elements. Topic-wise, I don’t box myself in but I keep a positive perspective.
Favorite moment from your career?
I’m living it right now; I feel like I’m on the cusp of something big and starting to get the respect I deserve. I’m enjoying the journey.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
I can honestly say that I’m inspiring myself right now with the songs I’ve been writing; I’m focusing more on messages and uplifting content.
What is your producing software?
I have my own home recording studio and record my vocals in ProTools, then send the session to my engineer to mix and master.
What other things do you do besides making music?
I’m really into fashion and anything creative; design, ideas for business, meaningful conversations. I’m a deep thinker so I like expanding.
What is your favorite track of all time?
Nas – “Meet Joe Black”
What is your best-producing tip?
Music is meant to be felt, not heard.
Why did you start making music?
I’d always admired the skill of putting words together, and loved how I could express myself through rapping and combining syllables with rhymes to convey my thoughts and ideas.
What are your goals for the future?
To keep growing my fan base and community that resonates with my messaging and vibes I put out. Also to start businesses/ partner with brands aligned with my lifestyle, and inspire others to follow their dreams.
What advice can you give for young music producers/DJs?
Keep going and follow your intuition when making music.
Please write a message to your fans.
I want to show people that anything is possible with the right mindset; if you believe in your purpose and apply yourself, you can bring your vision to fruition.
