Rising Panamanian pop music star Sofía Valdés reveals her new magnificent cover for Gwen Stefani song “The Sweet Escape”
The new unexpected cover for “The Sweet Escape” incorporates her signature indie-pop style with a splash of bossa nova – following on from recently released debut tracks “Handful of Water” and “Little Did I Know”, that were both released to critical acclaim.
Sofía shares about the cover, “I decided to record ‘The Sweet Escape’ because I thought it would be fun to take something so different than my style and make it my own. I grew up knowing the song pretty well, since my mom would play it in the car a lot. She would blast the song with the windows down. I would get furious because I was super sensitive to loud sounds and wind would make my hair messy, I was 6. But it’s now such a sweet memory.”
Sofía Valdés creates the kind of emotionally honest and beautifully original pop music that could only come from years of exploration. After learning to play guitar at the age of eight and writing her first song at 13, the independent-minded artist sharpened her craft in part by building an eclectic sonic vocabulary informed by everything from folk and bossa nova to ’60s Motown and ’70s soul.
On her debut EP Ventura, coming February 5, 2021, Valdés alchemizes those inspirations into a sound all her own, gracing each track with her indelible songwriting and beguiling voice.
