Filmed by Sophie van Hasselt and edited by Marat Guraksyan and Jonathan Niega, the “Set Me Free” music video was a chance for Mia Nicolai to prove to herself how far she has come.
Inspiration struck when she was strolling through London, brooding over how she was about to return to the very place where she realized she was trapped in a self-inflicted cage, Amsterdam. “I had my song on repeat and started visualizing what locations made sense for the feeling of the story.
I wrote it all out in my notes. When I finally got home and created a storyboard, it flowed out of me almost instantly.”
The music video toggles between childhood memories, present day, and dreamy cloud-scapes as Mia Nicolai gives the viewer a glimpse into her past, present, and future.
It is a stark tonal contrast to the lyric video, an intentional move by Mia Nicolai, as the music video is intended to visually reflect how the track makes the listener feel: blissful, relieved, free.
