Fresh from a stellar performance on Good Morning America, multi-Platinum-selling artist Olivia Rodrigo introduces her vibrant new single “bad idea right?” alongside its accompanying video.
This release follows her chart-topping single “vampire” and sets the stage for her eagerly awaited sophomore album ‘GUTS’, set to release on September 8 via Geffen Records/Universal Music Canada. Distinct from the poignant piano tones of “vampire”, “bad idea right?” offers a lively exploration of the temptation to revisit past relationships. The 20-year-old artist’s candid lyrics, paired with an energetic musical backdrop, highlight her signature songwriting style, first showcased in her 4x Platinum debut, ‘SOUR’.
The track, produced and co-written with Daniel Nigro, encapsulates the fun and spontaneity of its creation.
Olivia shares, “‘bad idea right?’ started with us making a joke song about me hooking up with an ex-boyfriend, but then we realized we were actually onto something,” Rodrigo says. “We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall — in one of choruses there’s a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it’s me gradually screaming louder and louder.”
The video, a collaboration with renowned artist/director Petra Collins, mirrors the song’s spirited vibe. Drawing inspiration from ’90s B-movie horror-comedy, it follows Rodrigo’s whimsical journey to an ex’s residence, blending surrealism with humor. The video premiered on various MTV platforms and even graced the Paramount Times Square billboards.
