Michal Gutman continues to shape a distinctive artistic path with her latest singles project, a gradual release series unfolding across 2025 and 2026. Known as a one woman band, Gutman performs an intense and immersive solo act built around bass guitar, loop station, two microphones, and a touch pad synthesizer. This setup allows her to construct a living sound environment where harmony and disharmony exist side by side, forming music that feels both theatrical and deeply personal.
The project’s title track, ‘War boys’, stands as the second release in the series and arrived in September 2025. Rather than presenting a traditional album format, Gutman chose a singles based approach, allowing each song to exist as its own chapter. This structure mirrors the emotional and conceptual depth of the work, giving space for each release to resonate independently while remaining connected to a broader artistic vision.
Sonically, Gutman’s music moves between cabaret like theatricality, the pulse of an 80’s club dance floor, and the atmosphere of a dreamlike soundtrack. Through the use of polyrhythmics and deliberately contradicting loops, she gently pushes the boundaries of sound without losing clarity or intention. The result is music that feels exploratory yet grounded in narrative.

Conceptually, the singles project continues Gutman’s long standing research into identity during catastrophe, the relationship between personal grief and society’s grief, and the presence of beauty within complex emotional spaces. These themes are woven through the sound rather than explained outright, allowing listeners to find their own connections.
This new chapter follows Gutman’s first solo album, “Never Coming Home”, released in 2024. It also builds on a decade of touring and recording with her band, Whaling Snails, whose work includes “Songs For Yael” from 2015 and “The Wind Around Your Heart” released in 2019. With this evolving singles project, Gutman further refines her singular voice while inviting listeners into a carefully unfolding creative world.
