Global rising star Maria Domark talks about her music career and the story behind her debut EP “Flawless“ in an exclusive interview
Tell us about your debut EP “Flawless”, how was it working on it, and what is the story behind it?
I’ve started working on this EP on the first lockdown. I was in a bad place and completely lost, going around many music producers but I didn’t know what I wanted to do.. I was used to being TOLD what to do so I didn’t know how to make my own decisions. so I was playing my guitar and the melody for “Haunted” came to me, and I’ve decided to produce my first original track on my own. then I just kept going and worked with modern god on more and more tracks till we had a whole concept for a debut.
Who is the next artist you would like to collaborate with?
I have an upcoming collab with six impala coming up next, I’ve been a huge fan of their work and I’m so excited for this crazy opportunity. and I’m actually working on an insane collab with an insane artist, but I’ll keep it as a surprise for now.
Where will we find you in 5 years? We’d love to hear some of your aspirations, dreams, and goals that you have.
I can’t wait to start touring. I think its a magical kind of energy, to preform in front of people who like your music and I can’t wait to feel it.. so I guess you’ll find me on a tour preforming my future bops, while people dance and sing along with me.
From all the singles you’ve released on your album “Flawless”, which one is your favorite?
they’re all special to me as they’re all the first songs I wrote on my own, but Haunted made it all happen and this line “no one is coming for me” helped me to become responsible for my own life and future and take control over my own art, and become an artist. so Haunted is the one.
Over the years you have become famous mainly due to your modeling career. What made you take the step towards the world of music?
I’ve been a musician my entire life, I knew this is what I wanted to do since I was a child, I taught myself to play guitar when I was 12 and I wrote songs, but my dream was crushed by my unsupportive family and me not being accepted into music major in high school so I believed that I could never be good enough and I just stopped playing the guitar and listening to my favorite bands. then later I became a model when I grew my instagram account and gained alot of followers but that was just a job and it helped me to “be on a stage” like I’ve always wanted, but that wasn’t my passion as it was only about looks. as I grew older and gained confidence I could admit to myself again that what I really want my life to be about is art and music.
As an artist, you are influenced by other artists you value and admire, who are the artists who have influenced you over the years, and is there anyone special?
when I was a kid I was a huge fan of Avril Lavigne, I wanted to be just like her so she really influenced me to learn how to play guitar and write my own songs. later I was influenced by the sound on Muse and Linkin Park and many other artists who have an electronic sound. my latest influence are artists like Grimes and other DIY artist who make their own amazing and creative sound, thanks to them I’ve learned that I can do music on my own and I can express myself the way I want to.
