The new single “Get To Me” finds Charles courageously cleansing herself from a toxic life situation, one where she “got used to feeling small” and “not feeling heard” alongside “empty promises and wasted tears.” Over swirling synths and mesmeric drum machines, Charles finds the strength to walk away, and in the process offers a cathartic and resilient mantra for those who may need it most – “I won’t let it get to me.”
“Over numerous instances in my life, I have had interactions with people that have hit closer to my heart than others,” says Charles. “I have learnt I tend to really take situations seriously and I almost always let them get to me a bit too much. In this song, I learn to deal with those difficult interpersonal situations and I try to not let them get to me as much as they have in the past.”
In this way, “Get To Me” is a reminder not to give power to negative forces that stop you from living your best and most healthy life. On the new original song, Charles continues to “bleed her true sense of self into her music” (Ladygunn) while intimately “exploring the complexities of relationships” (American Songwriter). She also teams back up with producer Doug Schadt, continuing a musical partnership whose previous work has been praised for “every element complementing each other to near perfection” (Ones To Watch).
Schadt craftily draws on his highly-lauded previous output, with recent collaborators including Maggie Rogers (“Alaska”), Ashe with Finneas O’Connell (“Bachelorette”) and Claud (“Wish You Were Gay”). “Get To Me” is Charles’ first new release from a bold and dynamic new batch of material coming throughout 2021, with much music and exciting news – including her return to the road – to follow in the months to come.
