Dru Chen Returns With Brand New Single “who We R”
Signed to Warner Music since 2018, Dru Chen has released a strong body of work for the past two years with the debut album titled Mirror Work and the live three-track EP, Spaces Between Us. The singles – “Distant Memory,” “When I Look Into Your Eyes” and “I Only Get It From You” – showcases Dru Chen’s fondness for the organic warmth of analog mixing. His homage to the golden era of music is also evident with the limited vinyl pressing of Mirror Work.
“When the time came to put together songs for my upcoming album, I jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with two close mates, producer Jesse Bear, and songwriter Paul McMurray. Paul originally wrote the song ‘Who We R’ as a folk/country song. It was genuine and clearly inspired by real life. I felt the pain in it as it had an immediate impact on me,” explains Dru Chen on the making of the track.
“This song is as much about our personal past as it is about how far we have come as a human race. It confronts the present trials and tribulations of the human condition as we step into an unknown future. It also has a special resonance for me as I have recently had many personal milestones and challenges, while I transition into a new phase of my life both as an artist and as an individual.
As a result, this song and the exciting batch of songs that will follow it feel like the best music I have ever worked on thus far.”
Co-produced by Dru and Jesse Bear, “Who We R” also features stellar cast of contributors, with fellow recording artist Benjamin Kheng (The Sam Willows), Geoff Ong (New Zealand based recording artist), producer Ebany Zhang and Dru Chen’s wife, Melyssa Goh on choir; producer Evanturetime (Charlie Lim, Linying, theodora) who contributed additional sound design, percussion, and loops; famed photographer Jayden Tan of Headquarters (Ffion, iNCH) who helmed the creative direction on single artwork; and styling by long-time collaborator Liyana Norman.
“Who We R” is the first single taken from Dru Chen’s as-yet-titled second album due in late 2020. The accompanying music video, directed by Jayden Tan, is slated for release on February 28, 2020.
