Fast-rising pop star BEKA returns with new upbeat single ‘Don’t Call Me A Friend’ via LAB Records & supporting HONNE on their UK tour
Her uplifting style oozes charm and compassion, and new single “Don’t Call Me a Friend” retains this thought-provoking sentiment with a nod to her Grandparents’ inspiring relationship that saw them pursue love against all odds. Written as a reminder to have “the courage to live your truth even in the face of negativity”, BEKA delivers a liberating pop banger that’s elevated by soaring synths and catchy drum beats.
Speaking of the track, BEKA explains: “In this body of work I’ve been exploring the themes of legacy and identity and part of my personal story is that my Grandparents, who met each other in the 50’s in North Yorkshire – one from the West Indies the other from York – at that time when most people thought they shouldn’t be together, pursued love even amidst the haters. In the midst of a bunch of negativity my Grandparents found a way to carve out a future together and choose love… for me this is such a really timeless idea and sat at some of the inspiration for this song “Don’t Call Me a Friend”.
She also adds: “When writing this, I was feeling done with being polite and I wanted to scream and shout and dance and let it all out. Musically I was trying to capture that moment when you close your eyes and imagine all your feelings, full colour, in music video format. This song for me is about letting out your feelings at full volume and having the courage to live your truth even in the face of negativity. It’s about being brave enough to choose the love you deserve.”
Earlier this month she headlined BBC Music Introducing Live at Omeara London, and has previously supported Laura Mvula at her sold-out show at London’s Islington Assembly Hall last September, as well as appearing alongside BRIT Award winner Griff for War Child UK’s ‘Day Of The Girl’. Last October, she performed her first headline shows in Nottingham and London respectively.
As her star continues to rise, BEKA has also just announced that she’ll be supporting HONNE on their UK tour this year. BEKA has worked closely with the duo for many years now and was the featured artist on their tracks “Crying Over You” and the Brooklyn Session of “Location Unknown”, before reuniting for her own single “More Than Friends”. Additionally, this summer she’s confirmed to appear at 1 Big Summer festival in June and Boardmasters in August, and will be announcing more festival shows in the coming week.
With great momentum behind her, BEKA is a serious one to watch who brings a captivating energy to the pop scene.
