Rising star Asha June releases a new magnificent cover of Nirvana’s Grunge Anthem ‘Heart Shaped Box’
Born to a Dutch father and Kenyan mother, Asha was as likely to hear Miriam Makeba as Dion Dimucci or The Supremes- “Growing up, the options were pretty limited to AM radio, or whatever Mum had on vinyl,” she jokes, adding her distinct vocal stylizing were, “likely as much due to the over abundance of country radio as it was to jazz.”
After completing her music education, including a BA honours in jazz, she spent time working in the corporate arena of the music industry. Her first efforts at a solo project brought her into contact with renowned musicians and producers in Toronto, and she spent her time honing her skills as a singer songwriter and performer.
Her latest release ‘Heart Shaped Box’, a chill pop cover of Nirvana’s grunge anthem “is a song [She’s] dreamt of recording for ages- Like countless others, their music is a constant comfort and inspiration,” she smiles. When asked about her new release, a rendition of Nirvana’s Heart-Shaped Box, “It’s my interpretation, it reflects where and how I feel at this point in life. That’s the power of music. It’s transcendent. And I’m so excited to share it with everyone!”
